In my very first Zabbix screencast I am explaining the basic concepts of the Zabbix monitoring software. Learn about the dashboard, hosts, items, triggers, actions and graphs. This is a brief walkthrough. In further screencasts I will give a more in-depth view into Zabbix's cool features.

Thank you for that hint. I tested the new Zabbix 2.0 package on the server that workaround.org runs on and the Apache conf broke all URL paths starting with /zabbix. :) It's fixed now.

Yes, sorry that videos don't work in IE. I admit that I have been lazy and not converting the video into different encoding formats. The videos I'm offering on workaround.org are currently in "WebM" format which I believe is the future of video formats. No flash player required (which usually crashes on my Linux workstation) required and more or less a "free" format. The IE9 is supposed to have WebM support, too. But my personal recommendation: use Firefox or Chrome if you can.

Good idea - I think I'll deal with the maps editor in another screencast. I owe doing one anyway.
Setting up links between icons and coloring them is pretty easy if you know how to. Just keep "Ctrl" pressed and click on two icons on the map to highlight both. Then you can add a "Link". The popup window gives you several options. One is to connect a link to a trigger. I use that for a map that shows problems with the VPNs between different locations. If a VPN is down then the link is shown red.
Regarding your display problem I can't really say much. Perhaps you can create a tiny screencast what you try to do and what happens.

wow...then i am waiting for your "maps editor -screencast"....
one more suggestion if i can share ,i will be grateful,Is there anything we have to deal with SNMP mibbs or something like that while we are going to check live map (i mean to check the live host /link /some other netwrok equipments up/down ) . And of course, I would like to give you thanks for your kind, quick and informative reply.Eagerly waiting for your coming screencast.
Well, nothing special
Submitted by Christoph Haas on
Well, nothing special actually about SNMP. You need to declare the "items" so that SNMP information is pulled into Zabbix. Then you will define "triggers" to tell Zabbix when a certain value of an item is not within the wanted range (e.g. temperature of a server is too high). And then you can use that "trigger" in your "map".
thanks a lot... i hope i will

hi,i solved the problem about not seeing any element icon in the map while we are adding them. It actually requires updated web browser, like before i was using IE, but now i am using mozilla ...so everything works fine :)
one confusion still i have, like if i add two device by a link in map in zabbix 2, do i need to add trigger for both devices ...because my intention is to check only the link is up/down

You can assign a trigger to a link. Just look around in the configuration popup and it should start to make sense.
As a matter of facts yesterday evening I started working on the screencast about maps. If everything works out perhaps I'm successful in getting it online today. A man can dream...

thank u very much. waiting for your screen cast then...and,as you said..to click the link and add a trigger there...but unfortunately in link ,nothing comes to add or remove...but ,now those hosts are connected by this link,in their config popup menu ...a new items added called "edit element links" .Do i need to add trigger in both hosts for ping to check link is up/down

To assign a trigger to the link you need to click on of the connected hosts and then at the bottom of the configuration popup you can add a trigger.

Hi, thanks for the nice intro, very nice!
So YOU are the debian package maintainer for zabbix? Great! Could you please give some hint where to find zabbix 2 packages for squeeze? I found dotdeb and some other sites, but I would like to use the most "official" one, thanks!
