There is. But it it's either not very nifty (pam_mysql) or not in Debian
(patches). For ideas how to use pam_mysql try the old Woody tutorial 
(http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail/old) and look for "crypt=1" to 
find the correct section.

If you don't mind having plaintext passwords in your database and just 
worry about transmitting them over the internet then use SMTP-SSL or 
enable DIGEST authentication.
