As I understand it, in Debian Etch and Lenny (tho I'm less sure about
Lenny), GRUB won't boot from LVM, lilo will, so lilo is installed instead.
What I do is install / on its own non-LVM partition and the rest on LVM,
in my case on RAID1, as I describe here:

I've read that if you want / to be LVM then GRUB2 will boot from LVM. I've
not tried this though.
