Have you ever wanted to create a stop-motion movie but never spend the time? Well, having kids is a good way to do all the things that seemed to childish or not worth the time to realize. So one day my son asked me how animations are actually done and I told him of stop-motions. Naturally he wanted to know if could do such a thing ourselves.
My first contact was quite accidentally when I heard of Javascript frameworks for the first time. There was a web project on my table. Of course the project was already overdue the day it was started so I barely had any time playing with Javascript frameworks. Back then I was pretty inexperienced and compared jQuery to ExtJS which is worse than apples vesus oranges. (Unfortunately I even blogged about that while I was in a hurry which made me look like a total jerk.
Pylons is a really nice web framework to create complex web sites in Python easily. I was not entirely happy with the old "pagination" module so I took the burden to rewrite it and finally came up with a "paginate" module that is nowadays part of the "webhelpers" Python package that is very useful in conjunction with Pylons.
I have written an introduction chapter on the module as part of the Pylons/Pyramid documentation.
Zabbix is a very complex software that takes weeks to fully understand. One of the most interesting, most complex and least documented features are escalations. They are used to define a schedule what Zabbix is supposed to do when a certain event occurs. Like waking up the system administrator or do some automatic emergency cleanup tasks.
The Debian GNU/Linux distribution consists of tens of thousands of software packages. To make sure the packages work correctly together only approved members of the Debian project (Debian Developers and Debian Maintainers) are granted the permission to upload software packages. But there are way more packages than available maintainers. So a large number of packages is maintained by non-official developers. How do they get their work into Debian when they are not allowed to upload their own packages directly? By means of a process called sponsorship.

Once upon a time I had a talk with a die-hard Windows sysadmin (Jens) about the differences between Windows and Linux. I recommended that he should just try an Ubuntu live CD. But I also told him that we are using Debian GNU/Linux on the servers our team was responsible for. I was quite surprised when a few days laster he told me a that he actually installed Debian on a computer and is now learning how to use the shell. He was especially impressed of the pool of readily available Debian packages.
jQuery is possibly the most widely used Javascript library to enhance web sites. It is simple to use but very powerful and extensible by the means of countless plugins. jQuery UI (=user interface) is an extension to jQuery providing a set of useful widgets like draggables, windows, progress bars, silders, datepickers and tabs. This article review the "jQuery UI 1.6" book written by Dan Wellman and published by Packt Publishing who kindly sent me a review copy. (I'm very late with my review. Meanwhile Packt has published a book on version 1.7.)
IRC is a great medium for getting instant help (at least on the freenode IRC network). I have collected some tips about Getting help on IRC to help you get help instead of getting barbecued.
